Airborne Museum Oosterbeek 12 September 2009

On 12 September 2009 I joined the battlefield tour of the friends of the airborne museum 'Hartenstein' at Oosterbeek. This tour was the beginning of a remembrance week, 65 years after Market Garden. We went to vital places in the area of Arnhem and Oosterbeek. The tour started with a visit to the renewed airborne museum. The building outside, the former hotel 'Hartenstein', headquarters of general Urquhart during the battle of the Oosterbeek perimeter, is brought in a very good condition. The glass entrance does indeed affect the originality of the building, but does provide a better entrance and a beautiful space for the museum shop. The typical atmosphere in the building has unfortunately disappeared. It is also unfortunate that the option has chosen for a different design, it's no longer a collecting museum but the museum has an informative function. The building is modern inside and very empty. Many photos and video, but from the dioramas of the past is nothing to see. Tractor is the Public Market Garden Experience. In a new underground space you walk through the battle of Arnhem with light and sound effects. Unfortunately it is not possible to study objects in detail. But especially the younger crowd should be thus addressed.
